Walt Disney World has already new discounts for 2026, but fans keep asking about the Free Disney Dining Plan and whether they should book a ticket discount during Cyber Monday or wait. We figured it’d be a good time to ‘answer’ those questions with our predictions as to if or when Free Dining will be released, and best guesses as to travel dates.

Both contain a lot of historical information and cover whether both the Disney Dining Plan (paid) and Free Dining (special offer or discount) are worth the money. Spoiler: they often are not.
The last few times the Free Dining deal dropped, Walt Disney World released the special offer in early January after teasing it a few days earlier. Each of the last few times, there have also been multiple waves of Free Dining, with subsequent sets of dates being released after the initial offering. This is the clear precedent for 2026, and what’s most likely to happen again. However, there are a couple of reasons why things could change next year, which we’ll discuss here.
As basic background, Walt Disney World historically dropped its Free Dining promotion between late March and mid-to-late April pre-COVID. This spring release window was common for about a decade, and happened year in and year out until the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. That year started a new trend due to people postponing trips until that new land debuted, so this was a change in 2019.
For reference, here are this year’s Free Dining dates:
- May 27 through June 26 (first wave)
- July 7 through August 6 (first wave)
- June 29 to September 30 (second wave)
- October 20 to November 1 (second wave)
- December 6 to December 22, 2025 (second wave)
None of these dates are bookable at this point, and not even the remaining ones have been available for several months.
Warning: It’s Almost Impossible to Make 2026 WDW Discount Predictions
The reason for that is simple, which is that the biggest change with the 2026 Disney Dining Plan is that Kids Eat FREE All Year in 2026 at Walt Disney World. This is good news, as that perk or offer is better than Free Dining for most of WDW’s target demo.
Here are the basics: Throughout all of 2026, guests staying at one of Walt Disney World’s more than 25 on-site Disney-owned resort hotels will get a FREE Disney Dining Plan for their kids (ages 3 to 9 at the time of travel) when purchasing a Disney Dining Plan as part of their package for the other members of their party (ages 10 and up at the time of travel).
The Free Disney Dining Plan included in this special offer depends on the Disney Dining Plan the adults in the party purchase. The Disney Dining Plan is included for kids ages 3-9 when purchasing a regular Disney Dining Plan for guests ages 10 and older in the party. The Quick-Service Disney Dining Plan is included for kids ages 3-9 when purchasing a Quick-Service Disney Dining Plan for Guests ages 10 and older in the party.
The Kids Free Dining Plan at Walt Disney World deal can be combined with other select special offers, meaning you may still be eligible to take advantage of other deals released for 2026. Already, we’ve seen all 2026 room-only discounts eligible to stack with the Kids Free Dining Plan offer, from bouncebacks to general public discounts. Even DVC point rental is eligible for the Kids Free Dining Plan!
Because the Kids Free Dining Plan is the baseline for 2026 and not a discount, it’s difficult to see how Free Dining fits into the picture. Maybe it’ll simply be offered like normal without any changes. In which case, Free Dining will be a worse deal for many guests since they’d be better off taking the Kids Free Dining Plan plus a room discount and paying for their own food.
Alternatively, there will either be changes to Free Dining to make it more attractive to families (and competitive with other promos) or it’ll be abandoned entirely as a special offer. I’m skeptical that Walt Disney World will ditch Free Dining, as it’s one of their most recognizable discounts of the year.
Few phrases are more powerful marketing than “free food,” and Walt Disney World usually runs whole marketing campaigns around Free Dining (whereas that’s uncommon with room-only deals, even if they’re the better special offer.)
Change is always a possibility when it comes to Walt Disney World. Over a long enough time horizon, everything ends. Free Dining is one of the longest-running discounts at Walt Disney World, but it too will be retired at some point. It could be randomly replaced in 2026, 2028 or 2038–who knows. That type of thing is impossible to predict, as it’s not reliant on precedent or other knowable factors.
My guess–and that’s all this is–is that Free Dining will return for 2026 in largely its normal form. Maybe there will be a ‘deal sweetener’ such as a per stay gift card, as this is something Walt Disney World already does for the UK market. This would be a really savvy move, rekindling interest in Free Dining and clearly distinguishing it from the Kids Eat Free promo. (Free Food + Free Money = Huge Marketing Win!)
It also wouldn’t surprise me if there are no changes whatsoever to the special offers lineup for 2026. That either Free Dining is aimed at a different audience than the Kids Eat Free offer, or that Walt Disney World will run it regardless, recognizing (probably correctly) that Free Dining will appeal to a lot of guests who don’t comparison shop.
It’s also possible that Walt Disney World will opt to use the Save Up to $250 Per Night at Disney World in Winter to Summer 2026 (which has already been released) to headline the big marketing push in the New Year. That discount is similar to the free dining gift card from previous years, which in turn was similar to Free Dining.
Will Free Dining be Released in early January 2026 or Spring 2026?
There’s precedent for both, but all of the recent precedent points to early January 2026.
This makes sense to me. The period between Christmas and early February is the biggest of the year for new bookings at Walt Disney World. There’s a reason why Walt Disney World puts so much effort into the ABC Christmas Day Parade–the window from then until the first couple weeks of January is historically a huge time for bookings. (Ditto the famous Super Bowl ad–that also has tremendous marketing value.)
Given the recent precedent of earlier travel dates for Free Dining, which we’d expect to be continued, it no longer makes sense to release Free Dining any later. That doesn’t leave enough runway between booking and traveling.
Which travel dates will be eligible for Free Dining?
That’s a good segue into potential 2026 Free Dining travel dates. Assuming that Walt Disney World offers it, we’d anticipate that Free Dining dates will track fairly closely with 2019, 2020, 2024 and 2025. (See this post for historical dates for the last decade-plus.)
Eligible travel dates will likely span from around Memorial Day through the end of July or early August 2026 (prior to the start of the off-season), with possible blockouts during peak weeks. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if Independence Day is not blocked out, as that has become less and less busy over the years.
With that said, the most reliable set of dates for Free Dining are usually in August to late September. Those dates are the slowest of the year at Walt Disney World, and have been the most common and consistent for Free Dining. Knowing that occupancy will be lower for these months, regardless, and that Free Dining isn’t as good of a discount as it once was, it would seemingly behoove Walt Disney World to just release all dates through September 2026 in the first wave. That’s what I’d do if I were in charge. It makes perfect sense to do this, even if past precedent doesn’t support this prediction. Things have changed.
Following this first wave, we fully expect a second wave of Free Dining for dates that are later in 2026. This is likely to become bookable between mid-March and April 2026.
The main reason Walt Disney World would not release discounts all at once for May through December 2026 relates to resort occupancy numbers. The company is really good at projecting hotel bookings, but it’s just like a weather forecast–more accurate as dates draw nearer and less accurate further into the future. Walt Disney World only wants to offer discounts as necessary to fill hotel rooms, so they release discounts in phases.
From past precedent, we also know that the each wave of 2026 Free Dining will likely be bookable for roughly one month, even if Walt Disney World doesn’t announce that. This probably won’t be noted up front–Free Dining will just quietly disappear from the available offers page. It’s also likely that this first wave of Free Dining will not be targeted, but instead, available for the general public to book. These are hardly bold predictions–this is based purely on past precedent.
Regardless of whether August and September are released in the first or second wave, they almost certainly will be eligible travel dates. The bigger wildcard comes in the second wave of Free Dining, which also might include portions of October, minus holiday weeks and fall break.
This year, Walt Disney World included October for the first time in a long time, but only after fall break had ended. We’d expect this dates to be included again, at minimum. We also wouldn’t be surprised if the first week or so of October is included.
A scattering of November and/or December dates could likewise be eligible. Jersey Week, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving are all obvious exclusions. However, there are other dates at the very beginning of November, as well as after Veterans Day but before Thanksgiving (and then immediately after Thanksgiving) that could be included. There’s likely to be a stretch in December after the first week and running until as late as December 23, 2026.
One wrinkle with subsequent waves is that they could offer different guest eligibility. It’s possible for the second wave of Free Dining to be targeted towards only Disney+ subscribers or Disney Visa Cardholders, and have a few ‘borderline’ weeks when occupancy is reasonably high (e.g. holiday weeks in October through December). Then a week or two later, the general public wave of Free Dining could be released that doesn’t include all of these dates.
Who Will Be Able to Book Free Dining?
There are many instances of Free Dining being offered exclusively to Disney+ subscribers and Disney Visa cardholders. This has sometimes been the promotion as a whole, and other times it has been select higher-demand dates or an exclusivity early booking window.
This has become less and less pronounced over the last few years, likely as Free Dining has faded in popularity. Again, we’d expect that trend to further accelerate in 2026 barring major changes and ‘deal sweeteners’ to the Free Dining promo.
Accordingly, it seems less likely that there will be anything special for Disney+ subs or Disney Visa cardholders–unless Walt Disney World gets really aggressive with eligible dates or improvements to the special offer.
There’s already been less interest in the Disney Dining Plan as a whole–even when it’s supposedly free–since its return a few years ago. Sticker prices on the DDP have increased, what’s included has decreased, there are more rules and exclusions, and there’s also the wildcard of discretionary spending shifting to Lightning Lanes as opposed to dining. All things considered, this shouldn’t be a huge surprise.
This is precisely why Walt Disney World is offering the Kids Eat Free in 2026 promo. It’s not out of corporate generosity or trying to make things easier for young families. While affordability for middle class families is a concern for Walt Disney World, that’s out of self-interest. Same goes for filling tables at restaurants that have seen their popularity decrease. The Kids Eat Free in 2026 promo will help solve that problem, at least in part. It should be a huge success.
The “problem” is that one unintended consequence of the Kids Eat Free in 2026 promo is that it further undercuts the popularity of Free Dining. All of this is entirely anecdotal, but I know readers of this blog used to be hardcore fans of Free Dining and the hype has largely fizzled out. By contrast, there was a lot more interest in the above-referenced $250 off per night discount. That’s good for helping pump up per guest spending metrics, but it does nothing to ‘solve’ the issue with tables going unfilled.
All of this makes us optimistic that Walt Disney World will do something to sweeten the deal with the 2026 Free Dining Deal. That they won’t want to further erode the cachet of what was once their most popular discount by far. Perhaps it’s wishful thinking, but it strikes me as highly logical to improve the quality of the Free Dining discount to make it more “competitive” with other special offers.
That would also serve the goal of increasing resort occupancy, maintaining elevated per guest spending metrics, and increasing table service restaurant fill rates. I guess we shall see–if Free Dining is coming in early 2026, it’ll probably be announced between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. We’ll keep you posted!
