Walt Disney World has announced new opening season timelines and details for the reimagined Animation Courtyard, and the attractions that the area will feature, including the Magic of Disney Animation and more. This shares the latest developments, along with our commentary and bigger-picture overview of the new-look Walt Disney Studios Lot.
In case you missed it, Animation Courtyard is currently being reimagined into the Walt Disney Studios Lot at Hollywood Studios. The biggest change is that the Roy E. Disney Animation Building is replacing Star Wars Launch Bay, and will house an all-new family experience, “The Magic of Disney Animation.”
The Walt Disney Studios Lot and “The Magic of Disney Animation” will open sometime in Summer 2026. The existing courtyard, minus the Little Mermaid musical, all closed back on September 25th. Character meet & greets have been relocated around the park to accommodate the closure.
Construction crews have wasted no time in getting to work on Animation Courtyard in the couple of months since it closed. You can see the large dumpsters filled with junk removed from the buildings. Notably, the Star Wars Launch Bay marquee is gone, as are awnings for character meet & greet and other facade elements. Disney has also already repainted the dance party space.
The biggest visible work we’ll see here is pavement replacement and new hardscape work to add more green spaces for play and relaxation, as well as the transformation of the former Star Wars Launch Bay facade into the Roy E. Disney Animation Building. With that, a giant Sorcerer Mickey hat will be added.
Of course, the biggest change is rather conspicuous while walking through Disney’s Hollywood Studios–the iconic archway that had been around since the opening day of the Disney-MGM Studios in 1989 has been demolished. It was one of the few surviving remnants of the original park, the rest of which arguably died 20 years ago.
The latest development is that Walt Disney World has shared new details about what the Walt Disney Studios Lot will offer, as well as opening timeframes for the new experiences. Here’s a rundown…
Debuting in Summer 2026 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, “Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!” will be packed with upbeat tunes and dancing as Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse embark on a road trip to find some of their best pals – Goofy, Daisy and Pluto – for the party. This show is currently over at Disneyland Resort in California, and soon guests will be able to join the fun in the newly reimagined Walt Disney Studios area at Walt Disney World.
Later in Summer 2026, “The Magic of Disney Animation” will invite guests to step inside the world of Walt Disney Animation Studios at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Discover animated characters as they leap from their portraits, and explore a playground inspired by Disney Legend Mary Blair’s “Alice in Wonderland” concept art.
Venture into “Off the Page!,” a stunning area born of collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering. Here, you can meet some of your favorite friends from beloved Disney stories across six unique departments from the animation studio:
- Story
- Layout
- Hand-Drawn Animation
- Computer Animation
- Lighting
- Effects
Each space will host incredible photo opportunities, like Mulan posing with an oversized storyboard panel in the Story department, or Rapunzel surrounded by a setting inspired by the classic multiplane camera in the Layout department.
Our Commentary
The most noteworthy aspect of this announcement is that the courtyard of the Walt Disney Studios Lot and a portion of the interior spaces will debut in Summer 2026. We were previously unsure of whether it would open in time for Cool Kid Summer, or might not be ready until much later in the year. It’s great to hear that the turnaround time is so quick on this.
Given that Walt Disney World already knows that “The Magic of Disney Animation” won’t debut until later in Summer 2026, that suggests to us the rest of the area will open in early summer–likely Memorial Day weekend–and “The Magic of Disney Animation” won’t debut until late June or July 2026. That much of a gap is likely since they’re already anticipating a bifurcated opening roughly 6 months in advance.
Also worth pointing out is that “Off the Page!” will have six different character meet & greets. That’s a really healthy number for a single land, but not surprising. Disney’s Hollywood Studios really has a robust roster of character meet & greets. We would’t be surprised to see a few relocated from elsewhere in the park to this space.
Aside from opening timelines, the big news here is that Walt Disney World is importing “Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!,” the hit dance party from Disney California Adventure. We have extensive experience with this production, so I’ll share my perspective on that.
Let’s start with the truly awful aspect of this show. I regret to inform you that “Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!” culminates in only one, truncated performance of the “Hot Dog Song.” Megatron typically prefers the song to be played on loop a half-dozen times, and would prefer this stage show meets dance party if that’s all it were.
Consequently, she gives “Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!” a 0/10 score, while also noting that it’s an absolute must-do for her every single visit. (Sounds like a fledgling Disney blogger, if you ask me–endlessly doing something she reviews negatively!)
I would give Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live very high marks. It is really, really good by the standards of this type of thing. Objectively, this is a much better dance party than the Disney Junior production it replaced. There’s a more cohesive narrative here, which can be enjoyed by parents and toddlers alike. “Where’s Daisy?” is a legitimately good song and the scene is shockingly well-produced.
Dance parties are generally low-ceiling attractions, so it feels kind of silly to say this is a 10/10 production. Even if accompanied by the “for what it is” caveat, it’s still difficult to give a dance party that type of score. Obviously, we’re not talking a Haunted Mansion or Rise of the Resistance caliber attraction here. But again, for what it is, this dance party is pretty close to flawless. Minus the whole abridged “Hot Dog Song” issue.
Animation Courtyard Reimagining
When the “The Magic of Disney Animation” returns to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in late Summer 2026, it’ll debut a new look for the facade. Topping the building will be Mickey’s iconic Sorcerer Hat, which is just like the real building in California.
“The Magic of Disney Animation” begins as the animators have temporarily stepped away, but the building is still buzzing with activity as the characters have come to life and they’re ready to play. Guests will interact with and explore silly takes on the iconic Disney Animation headquarters, including the many different studio departments.
You’ll see portraits come to life before your eyes just like they did in “Once Upon A Studio.” You’ll find inspiration with a short film (with a twist, of course). You’ll even pencil in some time to learn how to draw your very own character sketch.
Another addition is the “Drawn to Wonderland” playground filled with an oversized flower garden with musical instruments, a Mad Tea Party playset and a Tulgey Wood exploration area, all inspired by the original “Alice in Wonderland” concept art from Disney Legend Mary Blair. It’ll be the perfect whimsical indoor play area for little ones to grow “curiouser and curiouser!”
There will also be lots of character meet & greet experiences, and places to explore and create in the newly-reimagined Walt Disney Studios Lot. There will be plenty of play opportunities for families when this mini-land reopens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2026.
This all sounds similar to the temporary experiences over the last several months during “Cool Kid Summer.” That event was likely a proof of concept, and this is that type of experience realized in fuller form with permanent venues and actual high-quality Imagineering and placemaking.
The reimagining of Animation Courtyard will extend far beyond the walls of “The Magic of Disney Animation.” What’s currently the Animation Courtyard will be reimagined into The Walt Disney Studios Lot. The new-look land will draw inspiration from several buildings found on the Disney campuses in Burbank, California.
This special nod to the legendary Walt Disney Studios Lot includes the Florida version of the Studio Theater, which will continue to house “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure.” Over at the soundstage, you’ll find a fresh Disney Jr. show.
While exploring the studio grounds and courtyard area, families can take a break to play, relax, or snack on tasty treats under lush trees. And make sure to look around, too. You never know who you might see playing in the branches, soaking up the sun or digging in the grass.
Disney Animation artists and Walt Disney Imagineers are working hand-in-hand to bring the wonder and nostalgia of Disney Animation films to the whole courtyard in new and immersive ways families will love.
We’re really looking forward to the Walt Disney Studios Lot. This new-look area looks tailor-made for young families, and will definitely appeal to us more than literally anything else in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It’s the park where we spent the least time during our recent trip, and this will help remedy that.
With only one exception, the closure of Animation Courtyard and Star Wars Launch Bay has been a satisfying good riddance. The ‘land’ was arguably the worst at Walt Disney World, right up there with Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama. These are two big reasons to look forward to the future, even if there are some bittersweet elements of the overhauls.
Animation Courtyard had some serious dead mall vibes, but it was home to the iconic Disney-MGM Studios archway. That has been a fixture of the park since it opened back in 1989, and first served as the entrance for the studios park’s thesis attraction–the multi-hour backlot tour.
Obviously, a lot has changed since then. The archway had not served its original purpose or made much sense for more than half of the park’s existence. In fact, you could argue that its continued existence only reinforced the dead mall sensibility of Animation Courtyard–a visual identity defined by something defunct for decades, much like the vacant anchor store with the faded ‘Sears’ lettering at a mall that’s lost half its tenants. Still, the archway was a nice reminder of what once was with the Disney-MGM Studios.
The Walt Disney Studios Lot might be a stopgap, singles and doubles-style project–but it has the potential to be a massive improvement over Animation Courtyard, and a true asset to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Losing the dead mall vibes of this area is a huge win. Gaining an outdoor space that’s actually a pleasant, shaded place to spend time should be a massive win. Same goes for having an area and attractions that children who are too young for Toy Story Land can enjoy.
This has the potential to be a triple. Maybe even an inside-the-park home run that restores a certain quality from Michael Eisner’s opening day dedication that’s been missing for a while: “a state of mind that exists wherever people dream and wonder and imagine, a place where illusion and reality are fused by technological magic.” The Hollywood that never was — and always will be.
