It was supposed to be a sleepy summer for Walt Disney World. Heck, it was supposed to be a slow year for the parks, which is precisely why we wrote Should You Skip Walt Disney World in 2026 & Wait for 2027? The answer was that it depends, but the real plot twist was that what many people with the luxury of time might want to hold off not just until 2027, but actually Spring 2028.
Despite all of this, Walt Disney World has quietly put together a formidable slate of Summer 2026 offerings. That culminated this week, with the company pulling back the curtain and making 15 announcements in the form of new discounts, opening dates, entertainment updates, and more. They also reiterated or expanded upon a lot of what we already knew. This offers a rundown of that, along with our power rankings of the biggest additions, each of which now having opening dates or timeframes.
We’re not going to pretend this is some monster lineup that makes Florida a must-do destination for the hottest months of the year. Nor are we going to claim that Cool Kids’ Summer is going to eat Epic Universe’s lunch. (Universal’s new park is doing just fine at dropping its own food on the ground!)
By embracing a ‘singles and doubles’ mentality and fixing some of the most glaring weaknesses in the parks, Walt Disney World has cobbled together a lineup that gets me, personally, excited. Now admittedly, I am a diehard old school fan who makes regular visits to the parks and is a parent to a toddler and has an affinity for the Muppets and things that are distinctly patriotic.
It’s really as if Walt Disney World has tailored the whole summer slate to my unique interests. I will concede that much of this won’t be as exciting (or exciting at all) to you, even as fellow fans, and that almost none of it is anything that’s major or marketable to the general public. But that’s part of the beauty of this all!

For one thing, the ‘singles and doubles’ mentality fixes a lot of underutilized capacity within the parks. I know some of you hate that term, so how about this one: areas with dead mall vibes. Hopefully that’s more palatable. Giving these blighted areas a shot in the arm should help spread out crowds. Win-win!
For another, some of the attention being given to fan favorites is not “needed” in the strictest sense of the word. Pretty much every reimagining on this list is being made to an attraction that was already performing just fine. To paraphrase the inimitable Rizzo the Rat impersonating Mickey Mouse, tourists wouldn’t know any better. These improvements were aimed squarely at us, the fans.
Finally, by focusing on smaller scale stuff that falls short of the ‘marketable addition’ bar, Walt Disney World has hit this ‘goldilocks zone’ (for us fans) where they (still) have a greater incentive to discount in order to entice people to visit. And even with those deals, the practical reality is that they’re likely going to struggle to draw people to the parks to the same extent that they will with Tropical Americas, Monstropolis, etc.

I’m not going to make the pitch in favor of visiting Walt Disney World in Summer 2026. After all, it is still summer in Central Florida, a time that has become less crowded for very good reason!
But I will say that I’m looking forward to my upcoming visits far more than expected, and think fans who can tolerate the heat and humidity will be rewarded with lower crowds plus everything below. It’ll definitely be better than in a couple of years, when both Tropical Americas and Monstropolis have debuted!
Here’s a complete breakdown of everything that’s new, when it opens, what it actually means for your trip, and ‘power rankings’ of our excitement for each announcement…

10. Jessie’s Roundup: A Rip-Roarin’ Revue at Diamond Horseshoe – May 26, 2026
Young deputies are invited to mosey on over to the Diamond Horseshoe at Magic Kingdom during Cool Kids’ Summer for a rootin’ tootin’ good time this summer during Jessie’s Roundup: A Rip-Roarin’ Revue. Join Jessie, Woody, Bullseye, and more Toy Story pals for an energized roundup with songs, dance, games, and other playful activities.
Amusingly, there are a couple of misconceptions about Jessie’s Roundup: A Rip-Roarin’ Revue. It’s been misconstrued as Diamond Horseshoe becoming a character dining experience. That’s incorrect. There is no Toy Story 5 character meal coming. Now it’s being labeled as an interactive stage show, which is also wrong.
I feel sorry for the Cast Members who have to explain to disappointed guests that it’s “only” a glorified dance party. I’m still looking forward to Jessie’s Roundup: A Rip-Roarin’ Revue! This is exactly the type of thing that appeals to young families, and having it be indoors during the summer is perfect. My only request is that it’s not too loud. Disney’s dance parties are too loud, especially for developing ears.

9. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Reopens in Early May
After 16 months of refurbishment, the wildest ride in the wilderness is returning in early May. Walt Disney World hasn’t specified a date beyond that, but our belief is that Big Thunder is being delayed by the adjacent Piston Peak project and is in a holding pattern until that progresses past a certain point.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is undergoing a “a crevasse-deep to mountain-top refurbishment” refurbishment, which also entails some “new magic” being added. That’ll include all-new trains, refreshed sets and figures, new effects and lighting. The most highly-touted change thus far is an enhanced Rainbow Caverns scene; the most important change is the complete re-tracking, thereby extending the coaster’s life.
I’m less bullish on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad than most, and think some fans are setting themselves up for disappointment with unrealistic expectations. It’ll be great to have BTMRR back after over a year, but I’m not particularly excited about the ‘newness’ angle of this project beyond that. It’s #9 in my power rankings, which reflects lower hype as opposed to my opinion of the attraction itself (BTMRR is a classic for good reason).

8. Walt Disney Studios Lot Takes Shade on May 26, 2026
While The Magic of Disney Animation arrives later, the storytelling begins outdoors. Opening May 26, the courtyard surrounding the attraction transforms into “The Walt Disney Studios,” an outdoor space inspired by the iconic Burbank studio lot.
Drawing from the architecture and atmosphere of the legendary campus, the area features familiar studio details, including the Studio Theater and a nearby soundstage, all set within a relaxed, park‑like setting designed for families to explore.
We’ve already spotted trees in aerial construction photos that have been planted. Not just any trees, though, mature trees. Give me a good bench or two and what was a space oozing in dead mall vibes will actually be enjoyable. This ranks #8 for me.

7. Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! Takes Stage on May 26, 2026
Once you’ve gotten your fill of shade, head inside to “Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!” This dance party features Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse embarking on a road trip to find some of their best pals – Goofy, Daisy and Pluto – for the party. This is currently shown at DCA, and soon guests will be able to join the fun in the newly reimagined Walt Disney Studios area at Walt Disney World.
As someone who has experienced “Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!” dozens of times, I can say with authority that it’s shockingly good. Better than it has any right to be, quite honestly. The only downside is that it ends (spoiler alert) with an abridged version of the Hot Dog Song, when really that should be played on loop. (Speaking of which, hopefully it is part of the BGM loop for the Walt Disney Studios Lot.)
“Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!” was cancelled twice during our day at DCA last week, and our toddler is still airing her grievances about. (She’s got blogger’s blood!) Suffice to say, this will be the thing on this list our family experiences most, regardless of where I rank it. I’ll slot it in at #7.

6. Bluey’s Wild World Arrives on May 26, 2026
Bluey and Bingo are finally on their way to Animal Kingdom! Starting May 26, 2026 and staying beyond summer, guests can play games and dance with Bluey’s Wild World at Conservation Station.
Once guests hop off the Wildlife Express Train, it’s time for fun. Play special games directly from “Bluey” episodes, grab a photo with Bluey and Bingo themselves, and even discover animals native to Bluey’s home country, Australia, at “Jumping Junction.”
Conservation Station has historically been an underutilized corner of Animal Kingdom. It’s a fascinating space, especially when there are animal procedures to observe. But the train ride out adds a bit too much friction for many guests. The most popular children’s show on the planet could change the calculus for families with young kids.
Our hope is that Disney has budgeted accordingly for the Bluey’s Wild World (semi?) permanent overlay, as this needs to be excellent to live up to the IP and convince parents that it’s worth the hassle of heading to Conservation Station. Ideally, this #6 ranking will be too low.

5. The Magic of Disney Animation Arrives in Late Summer
In late summer 2026, the Magic of Disney Animation is reimaged. Inside the building, the animators have stepped away… and the characters come to life. You’ll see portraits transform just like they did in Once Upon A Studio, inspiration with a short film, and more.
One highlight is the “Drawn to Wonderland” playground, filled with an oversized flower garden with musical instruments, a Mad Tea Party playset, and a Tulgey Wood exploration area. Another is “Off the Page!,” a meet & greet area celebrating the artistry with 6 unique backdrops.
Enjoy a new Animation Academy experience with Olaf Draws! Brought to life as an all-new Audio-Animatronics figure, Olaf welcomes guests into a space inspired by Once Upon A Studio, where he sits at an animator’s desk, discovering the art of drawing. Stepping into a reimagined animator’s studio, guests of all ages are invited to sit down and learn to draw. (Big downside: no more human host.)
Late summer in Disney parlance typically means the end of June or July. Sometimes August if the project is a race against the clock, which very well might be the case here given the ambition level. Summer ends with Labor Day at Walt Disney World.
As a kid who grew up on the Magic of Disney Animation, I cannot wait to step inside this space again and introduce it to my daughter. The 1990s incarnation of this space was imaginative, informative, and inspiring–giving many fans a lifelong love for (as the name suggests) the magic of Disney animation. If Imagineering captures the heart and soul of the old space, this will overdeliver on its #5 ranking.

4. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run w/ Mando & Baby Yoda Debuts May 22, 2026
Starting May 22—timed to coincide with the theatrical release of the new Mandalorian and Grogu film—Smugglers Run gets a new mission that sounds like a genuine improvement over the current ride.
The new premise is that Hondo Ohnaka has gotten wind of a deal going down on Tatooine between ex-Imperial officers and a band of pirates. There’s a generous bounty for their capture, so you’ll borrow the iconic ship and team up with Mando and Grogu to track them down and explore the galaxy.
Meaning that the mission will depart Batuu bound for Tatooine, and the crew will choose from one of three destinations–Bespin, Endor, or Coruscant–from there. The much-reviled engineer role also gets a new responsibility–babysitting Baby Yoda! Whether that’s a token interaction to make the least popular position more attractive or something more substantive, remains to be seen.
No changes to the bigger picture attraction packaging are expected, meaning the pre-show and queue will remain largely as-is, perhaps with the swapping out of some minor props. A refurbishment has not yet been announced, so we’re expecting whatever happens to be done overnight.
There’s a pretty high likelihood of this being a major upgrade over the old Smugglers Run mission. If they can improve the gameplay loop, and make it at least as good as the current asteroid field delay scene, it’ll be a huge win. The overall attraction package is good, it’s the ride element that’s weak. On my power rankings, the Mando & Baby Yoda mission is #4.

3. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Recharges April 8, 2026
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin closed for refurbishment late last summer (August 4th), so it’s been closed for over 7 months at this point. And thankfully, it’ll return ahead of Summer 2026, with an official reopening on April 8, 2026. Although as we explain, there’s a strong possibility of soft openings or previews for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin prior to that.
The ride’s opening scene features an all-new character, a friendly robot aptly named “Buddy” who was created by Imagineering and Pixar to play a key role on the Star Command team. As a support-bot, Buddy makes sure departing Space Rangers are fully prepared for their mission. During a tutorial scene taking the new vehicles for a spin, which feature video monitors that provide real-time scoring.
They also offer new handheld blasters for better aim, helping guests to score even more points. These enhanced handheld blasters will now include an always-on laser; they also come in two different colors per Star Cruiser to reduce confusion and assist with aim. Other enhancements include new lighting, plus sound and vibration effects, so players know where they’re aiming throughout the mission.
In my power rankings of the upcoming additions, the ‘recharged’ Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is #3. I have high expectations for this one, strongly believing it could leapfrog the Disneyland version and become one of the best blaster rides worldwide.

2. Soarin’ Across America Takes Flight May 26, 2026
Soarin’ will be receiving an all-new airborne adventure as part of the US Semiquincentennial by May 26, 2026 (as discussed here, we strongly believe this is another high-probability soft opening candidate). The new bi-coastal offering will showcase the United States—from sea to shining sea—highlighting some of the country’s natural beauty and iconic cityscapes, including the Grand Canyon.
Soarin’ Across America will be brought to life with the iconic elements that make Soarin’ unforgettable – the flight, the sights and score, even the scents. Walt Disney Imagineering is hard at work capturing more than a dozen breathtaking locations for the new flight.
As someone with a deep love of America’s Greatest Idea, our National Parks, I am incredibly excited for Soarin’ Across America. It should feature less distortion and more natural beauty than the current version, no CGI, and stunning landscapes. If Imagineering sticks the landing, Soarin’ Across America will make Sam Eagle shed a single tear.
Who am I to argue with Sam Eagle? This ranks #2 with #1 potential.

1. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets Takes the Stage Summer 2026
Aerosmith officially retired as a band in August 2024. They roller coaster-retired on March 2, 2026. Some might say it was the end of an era. The Muppets ended their own era last summer with the closure of MuppetVision, and will be embarking upon a new era in Summer 2026. (What is it with rockstars and eras?!)
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets will feature Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and more of their friends. The Muppets will be moving right along to Sunset Boulevard, teaming up with some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival.
At Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, you bet we’ll have rock as we roll across Hollywood on a wild ride with the Electric Mayhem – complete with backstage chaos, high-speed thrills, signature Muppets music & humor, and all-new Audio-Animatronics figures.
As a diehard Muppets fan, putting this anywhere but #1 would be distinctly unpatriotic. I do fear my own expectations are a tad too high, but feel that Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith is the floor on this, meaning it’ll be at least that good–and potentially much better if the pre-show, Audio Animatronics, Easter Eggs, music, and everything else are done well. It could easily secure that #1 spot, or slip all the way to #5. The competition is shockingly strong!

Cool Kids’ Summer Programming
Beyond the permanent and semi-permanent additions above, Walt Disney World reiterated the return of the Cool KIDS’ SUMMER special event from May 26 through September 8, 2026. Much of this was already known, but here’s a recap:
EPCOT: GoofyCore at CommuniCore Hall. Dance and play along with the Goof Troop, DJ Dance Pants, and Goofy himself during wacky activities at CommuniCore Hall at EPCOT. Goofy’s Game Machine brings silly, kid-approved games like Goofy Says, Balloon Bonanza, and Parachutes ‘n’ Pipsqueaks. Last year’s GoofyCore was the best-ever use of CommuniCore Hall ever, which isn’t a high bar but is still notable.
Disney Springs: On select nights at the Marketplace, a dance party celebrates the new Descendants: Wicked Wonderland and Camp Rock 3 films coming to Disney+ this summer. I don’t know what these things are, but I’m told they’re popular.

Water Parks: Just for the summer, guests can meet Goofy in his laid-back beach style at Blizzard Beach or catch Stitch spreading playful chaos at Typhoon Lagoon. Disney H2O Glow After Hours returns to Typhoon Lagoon on select nights from June 2 through September 5 as a separately ticketed event, adding characters like Powerline Max and the Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers.
Additionally, guests staying at an on-site Disney hotel between May 26 and September 8, 2026, can enjoy free admission to one of the Walt Disney World water parks on their check-in day. What’s more, both Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach will be open during this time again. This could be a good hackable option when combined with the 4-Park Magic Ticket.

Early Entry: This summer, free-roaming character appearances will once again take place across all four theme parks, giving you more time to meet and mingle with some of your favorites. Be sure to visit each theme park across different days so you can see them all! This was a quiet plussing last summer.
Kid-Friendly Resorts: Guests staying at Pop Century, Art of Animation, Caribbean Beach, and Port Orleans Riverside will have even more experiences and amenities designed for families with young children, including scheduled visits from favorite characters. There will also be extra available amenities and libraries for children.

Deluge of Deals for Summer
Free Dining Plan: The popular Free Dining deal is back for select dates from June 28 through December 21, 2026. We strongly encourage doing the math and comparison shopping, because everything else on this list is stackable, whereas Free Dining is not. See Free Dining Deal for Summer to Christmas 2026 Expands to Everyone for more info & analysis.
4-Day, 4-Park Magic Ticket: Starting at $99/day for visits May 26, 2026 through October 3, 2026. One park per day, one admission per park. For guests who fit squarely within the parameters of this ticket, it’s an incredible deal. See Walt Disney World’s Biggest Ticket Deal for Everyone is Back & Better, Including Magic Kingdom in 2026 for full details, as well as advice on hacking this deal, pros & cons, etc.
Stay Longer & Save More Room Deal: Stays of 5+ nights at Walt Disney World resort hotels can save up to 30% from July 30 to October 3, 2026. Shorter stays are available with lesser savings, too. See Stay Longer & Save More: 30% Off Disney World Resorts in Summer & Fall 2026 for more.
