Disney World Announces Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Opening Date & Details!

Walt Disney World announced the Spring 2026 reopening date of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom. This covers everything you need to know: debut date and new details, predictions about soft openings & previews, Lightning Lanes vs. standby lines, and more!

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin closed for refurbishment late last summer (August 4th), so it’s been closed for over 7 months at this point. The project began prior to that, with Imagineering filing construction permits for the ride reimagining, eager to get started on work to have Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin reopen as soon as possible in 2026.

They even did work after-hours on the attraction while it was still operational earlier in the year, replacing outdated equipment and testing new tech. All of this suggested that the turnaround time would be tight on the project and they wanted to accomplish as much as possible to modernize the dated Buzz blaster ride.

Before we dig into the details of reopening, let’s quickly bring you up to speed on the enhancements to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. The ride’s opening scene features an all-new character, a friendly robot aptly named “Buddy” who was created by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios to play a key role on the Star Command team.

As a support-bot, Buddy makes sure departing Space Rangers are fully prepared for their mission, providing encouragement, final system checks on their Star Cruisers, and a chance to hone their blaster aim. During this tutorial type scene, guests can check out the new, interactive target features before blasting off to defeat the Evil Emperor Zurg and save the galaxy.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has also received a face lift to its Star Cruiser ride vehicles with a new design inspired by the colors of Buzz Lightyear and Star Command. Each enhanced ride vehicle now comes equipped with video monitors that provide real-time scoring updates and other exciting features.

Star Cruiser ride vehicles also now feature handheld blasters for better aim, helping guests to score even more points. If you’ve ever wondered where you’re aiming (don’t worry, you’re not alone), these enhanced handheld blasters will now include an always-on laser; they also come in two different colors per Star Cruiser to reduce confusion. Other enhancements include new lighting, plus sound and vibration effects, so players know where they’re aiming throughout the mission.

The static Z targets found in the old attraction have been upgraded with new technology that allows them to react and light up when hit. It also opens the door for a few other ideas Imagineers have in mind.

As part of Walt Disney World’s Full Calendar of Dates & Details for Reimagined Rides, Areas & Attractions Coming in 2026, WDW revealed late last year that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin in Magic Kingdom would resume operations in Spring 2026.

Fast-forward a few months, and we’ve just gotten word from Star Command that our mission is almost ready! Join Buzz Lightyear to save the galaxy from the evil emperor Zurg on this recharged attraction at Walt Disney World in less than one month.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will officially open on April 8, 2026.

Soft Openings

Soft openings are also known as trial operations or technical rehearsals, and are basically an unannounced and controlled test period. They provide an opportunity for theme parks to open an attraction prior to its official opening and conduct operations and Cast Member training in a more forgiving and low stress environment.

Typically, these are not publicized via official resources: not on park maps, the official Disney Parks Blog, annoying TikTok videos, wait time boards, or even in the My Disney Experience app. As a result, they always draw significantly fewer crowds than official openings. They’re a nice perk for guests who are already in the park and the most plugged-in Walt Disney World fans.

Walt Disney World had moved away from soft openings in the last few years, before bringing them back with TRON Lightcycle Run. That was the last big brand-new attraction to debut, before Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and other reimagined rides, none of which have had soft openings in any meaningful sense.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is more like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure than every major attraction opening since 2021. In all of those cases, Walt Disney World purposefully postponed the openings–it wasn’t simply a matter of staffing shortages or construction progress. The opening dates were slow-rolled for strategic purposes.

It’s a totally different story with Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. As opposed to being purposefully postponed, this has been accelerated. It’s been a race against the clock just to get it ready in time for Spring 2026!

This is more similar to TRON Lightcycle Run, which had soft openings as a ‘surprise and delight’ addition, which also served to add much-needed capacity during Spring Break. We’d note here that April 8, 2026 is right after the peak week of Easter, and it’s entirely possible (even plausible) that Magic Kingdom will want Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin back online, and for all guests, before that if possible.

Accordingly, we can’t make any confident predictions with regard to general public soft openings. It really all depends upon how conservative Walt Disney World is with the official opening date, how smoothly work goes between now and then, if unanticipated issues arise during test & adjust, etc.

My gut says that there will either be soft openings or affiliation previews. Not both. And honestly, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if this is an instance of Walt Disney World opting for soft opening as opposed to AP/DVC/etc. previews. Especially given the aforementioned timing of Easter week right before this.

Not only is it not a fully-fledged ride reimagining, but the timing around Spring Break might necessitate having this capacity online ASAP. That’s doubly true given that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is delayed, and will not reopen by Easter, either.

On top of that, there have been recent reports/rumors that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is already in ‘playtest previews’ with the project team and their families. If these previews are happening a full month ahead of the April 8, 2026 reopening date, it’s entirely plausible–likely, even–that there will be something for fans or the general public.

AP & DVC Previews

Walt Disney World’s recent approach has been to forgo soft openings in favor of more controlled previews for select affiliation groups, including Cast Members, Disney Vacation Club Members, Annual Passholders, Golden Oak Residents, Club 33 Members.

It’s entirely possible that previews for DVC Members, APs, and other affiliation groups start a week ahead of the official opening, around the first week in April or last week in March. If previews happen, it’s likely that pre-registration will not be required, but instead, you’ll need a park reservation for Magic Kingdom (at least for the first entry time), and a virtual queue will be used to access Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin during previews.

Alternatively, Walt Disney World will use pre-registration and no virtual queue. They’ve been moving away from this in recent years, though, so we’d bet against it. Both of us will be monitoring our emails like hawks in the coming weeks and will give you a heads up ASAP if/when preview registration goes live. Lightning Lane Status

Next up, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin’s Lightning Lane status. The first question, I guess, is whether it’ll be part of Lightning Lane Multi-Pass or becomes another Lightning Lane Single Pass at Magic Kingdom.

This isn’t really much of a question. There’s a 99.99% chance that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is part of Lightning Lane Multi-Pass, not Single Pass. Magic Kingdom isn’t suddenly going to have 3 LLSPs to every other park’s single Single Pass.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is only a ride enhancement, and almost certainly one that’s less ambitious in nature than Test Track 3.0 or Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom. It’s different from TRON Lightcycle Run or Cosmic Rewind in that regard, and should be part of Lightning Lane Multi-Pass.

The better question is whether Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin moves up into Tier 1/Group A or remains on the b-team. And regardless of what happens, how to Magic Kingdom Lightning Lane Multi-Pass priorities change?

My bet is that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin stays in the second tier. Again, this is a ride enhancement, as opposed to a new attraction or even a fully-fledged reimagining. Unless a lot more has changed than Imagineering has let on, this is going to return as fundamentally the same attraction–just modernized and plussed. That should keep it firmly on the b-team. That’s doubly true with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad also reopening soon.

Assuming it remains in Tier 2, we fully expect Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin to rocket up the rankings to #1 or #2. Currently, ride reservations are often limited for Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The same will be true for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin.

It’s more a question of how limited, or if it’ll be the most limited. On a positive note, both this and BTMRR returning will provide relief, and Magic Kingdom will have the most Lightning Lane inventory since Multi-Pass launched.

Early Entry & Extended Evening Hours

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin was previously part of both the Early Entry and Extended Evening Hours at Magic Kingdom lineups. There is every reason to believe it’ll be part of both again in due time.

However, it’s possible it won’t be part of one or both lineups immediately. The ride rosters for these offerings are dictated by staffing and budgetary constraints, which is one of the reasons why TRON Lightcycle Run is inexplicably still not part of the Early Entry lineup at Magic Kingdom. (Although that excuse is wearing thin.)

That’s another extreme case, though, and I wouldn’t bet on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin taking that long to be added to the ‘extra hours’ lineups. My guess is that it happens sometime in April 2026. It wouldn’t surprise me if it happens from day one, April 8, 2026, honestly.

Another wildcard is After Hours at Magic Kingdom, which has had a similar issue with recently-reopened rides not joining the attraction lineup for the event. Again, we assume this comes down to staffing and budgets, but either way, it’s a lame excuse for such an expensive event.

Just be aware of the possibility that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin won’t be part of Early Entry, Extended Evening Hours, or After Hours right away. Hopefully it will, and this ‘warning’ is for nothing. We’re just sharing because this has happened before, and catching guests by surprise and causing disappointment.

Tomorrowland Magic Kingdom Disney World 717

Ultimately, it’s fantastic that Imagineering is giving Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin the love it deserves. This is a low-risk/high-reward project that could make this the best or second-best Buzz blaster ride in the entire world. At minimum, it should become the best in the US.

This modernization to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin should be a win for guests of all ages and skill levels. It will make gameplay more intuitive and user friendly, which is great for less tech-savvy guests or non-gamers. It should also scale better, as the gamers in the group are able to attain higher scores and experience a more challenging and competitive attraction than its predecessor, which was way too easy to max out at 999,999 points.

I’m really excited for the enhancements to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. Of the two Magic Kingdom reopenings (this and Big Thunder), I’m much more enthusiastic about this, and feel the potential upside is far greater. Even though it’s been a longer closure, my expectation is that BTMRR mostly received invisible improvements, extending its usable life, and less on the show side. By contrast, Buzz should feel fresh and different. At least, that’s my hope!

Honestly, my only disappointment here is that Walt Disney World is reopening Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin on April 8, 2026 as opposed to taking more time on the refurbishment. I know that’s bound to be an unpopular opinion among WDW planners who are visiting in Spring 2026, but I’d prefer Imagineering have as much time as possible to fix or update everything that needs it, and have this be a Cool Kids’ Summer debut instead.

This could be a major upgrade that breathes new life into the reimagined ride and turns it into one of the more popular attractions in Magic Kingdom–a top 5 wait time and #1 tier two Lightning Lane pick. It’s really hard to imagine this being a downgrade–it’s really more a question of just how much of an upgrade it’ll be. In case it’s not clear, we cannot wait to ride the recharged Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin starting on April 8, 2026!

Imagineering has a lot of ‘singles and doubles’ style projects on its plate right now that are similar to this, and I’ll be very curious to see how they deliver. After scattershot results in other projects that have been initiated during the post-reopening era, this gives creatives a chance to “prove themselves” to fans. It’d be nice to restore some lost goodwill and confidence in Imagineering before they get to the big new additions that are part of Walt Disney World’s 5-Year Plan.
