Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Muppets Opening Date & Previews Announced by Disney World!

Walt Disney World has announced the Summer 2026 debut date for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets, and against all odds, it’s earlier than expected! This covers everything you need to know: opening date and new details, predictions about soft openings vs. affiliation previews, Lightning Lanes, and more!

As basic background, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will soon embark on a Muppets takeover featuring Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and more of their friends. The Muppets are in the process of moving right along to Sunset Boulevard, teaming up with some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival.

Walt Disney World has really been pulling the curtain back on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets. We’ve learned about the courtyard, backstory, setlist, post-show, Audio Animatronics, and pre-show stage-setting scene. If you want to know more about the attraction, we cover that deeper in the post.

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets is one of the higher profile attraction openings of Summer 2026. That’s definitely true for Walt Disney World and/or Muppets diehards, especially since this ride reimagining was basically an olive branch to fans following the closure of MuppetVision 3D.

Walt Disney World has now announced that Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets will open on May 26, 2026!

Starting May 26, the legendary ride roars back to life with a rock-charged remix that drops guests straight into the middle of The Electric Mayhem’s biggest night yet. With high-speed thrills, a pulse pounding soundtrack, and a VIP list like no other, this reimagined attraction hits all the right notes.

Now, let’s turn to questions about the Lightning Lane status, whether the ride will be open during extra hours, and potential soft openings vs. AP/DVC previews ahead of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets official reopening on May 26, 2026…

Soft Openings

Soft openings are also known as trial operations or technical rehearsals, and are basically an unannounced and controlled test period. They provide an opportunity for theme parks to open an attraction prior to its official opening and conduct operations and Cast Member training in a more forgiving and low stress environment.

A handful of attractions have had soft openings in the last few years, including TRON Lightcycle Run and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom (as well as Starlight Night Parade and Test Track 3.0). Given how the refurbishment has unfolded and its reopening timeline, we would’ve assumed Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets would have soft openings.

However, Walt Disney World has already teased previews for Cast Members, eligible Disney Vacation Club Members and Annual Passholders ahead of the ride’s reopening on May 26, 2026. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets having affiliation previews almost assuredly means it will NOT have soft openings. It’s usually one or the other.

That is, unless it’s way ahead of schedule and has several weeks of previews, in which case it could have a weekend or so of soft openings. We wouldn’t necessarily rule that out (it sorta happened with Test Track in the evenings during its later previews), but we wouldn’t count on it, either.

AP & DVC Previews

Walt Disney World’s usual approach has been to forgo soft openings in favor of more controlled previews for select affiliation groups, including Cast Members, Disney Vacation Club Members, Annual Passholders, Golden Oak Residents, Club 33 Members.

As indicated above, Walt Disney World has already announced that affiliation previews of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets will happen. This is confirmed. It’s a matter of when, not if. It’s also a question of logistics, meaning virtual queue vs. pre-registration.

With such a tight turnaround time for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, we wouldn’t expect previews for DVC Members, APs, and other affiliation groups to start more than a week or two ahead of the official opening, around the mid-May 2026 at the earliest.

As with other recent previews, it’s likely that pre-registration will not be required for Annual Passholders, but instead, you’ll need a park reservation for Disney’s Hollywood Studios (at least for the first entry time), and a virtual queue will be used to access RnRC during previews. DVC is usually different, and does do registration.

At least, that’s how things have gone for the last few previews–there’s always a chance Walt Disney World could change things for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets. We’ll keep you posted!

Single Rider Line Rock Roller Coaster Hollywood Studios Disney World 215

Lightning Lane Status

The excitement for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets has led some Walt Disney World fans to speculate that the reimagined ride could become a Lightning Lane Single Pass attraction, joining Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance as the second LLSP attraction in DHS.

Walt Disney World has confirmed that this won’t be the case. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets will occupy the exact same status as its predecessor, as a Tier 1/Group A attraction as part of the Lightning Lane Multi-Pass service. Not really much speculation necessary here since this is already official.

This shouldn’t come as a colossal surprise to anyone paying attention. Since the a la carte Lightning Lane tier debuted back in October 2021, it has actually lost attractions. This is despite several new headliners opening since that time at Walt Disney World.

While we’re at it, we fully expect the Single Rider line to return for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets. Perhaps not from day one, but the precedent set by Test Track last summer suggests that it will!

Extra Hours

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster was previously on the ride roster for both Early Entry and Extended Evening Hours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It’s once again on both lists, so there’s every reason to believe it’ll be part of both again in due time.

However, it’s possible it won’t be part of one or both lineups immediately. The ride rosters for these offerings are dictated by staffing and budgetary constraints, and it sometimes takes new or returning rides more time to join the lineups. That strikes us as unlikely here, especially since Walt Disney World proactively added Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets to the lineups for both.

Just be aware of the possibility that Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets won’t be part of the various extra hours right away. Hopefully it will, and this ‘warning’ is for nothing. We’re just sharing because this has happened before, and catching guests by surprise and causing disappointment.

Here’s everything else we know about the refreshed Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets based mostly on previous announcements. This is mostly retreads of old news, so you might’ve been down this road before if you’ve been following the RnRC reimagining

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets Backstory

The Electric Mayhem are headlining their biggest Hollywood concert ever! Anyone who’s anyone is in attendance to witness Animal, Dr. Teeth, and the rest of this groove-tastic group rock the house down. There’s just one little problem: the band is nowhere to be found.

Across town at G-Force Records, we’re treated to a VIP tour of the legendary rock and roll recording studio. Things might look a little different around this Hollywood institution, as the label has recently come under new management – The Muppets!

The colorful crew has landed some new digs, with just a little help from Scooter’s uncle, real estate tycoon and owner of the Muppet Theatre, J.P. Grosse (he puts the G in G-Force). Just wait until you see how they’ve made these hallowed halls their own, creating the perfect place to make sweet, sweet Muppet music together!

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Courtyard

For fans of that big guitar, you’ll be stoked to know that the newest residents of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster are putting their own spin on that ruby red paint job.

A vibrant and psychedelic new design will grace the bottom of the guitar (inspired by a classic Muppet car paint job); the piano motif at the base will feature a golden key as a nod to Dr. Teeth. Otherwise, it looks like the courtyard is mostly unchanged, as is the actual facade of the building.

This was to be expected, as previously-filed construction permits indicated that the guitar was being repainted. It wouldn’t have made sense to repaint it so close to closure…or to repaint it and then remove the guitar. But stranger things have happened, and one hand doesn’t always know what the other is doing.

With posters in every corner highlighting the iconic band’s larger-than-life career, you’ll have plenty of groovy backgrounds to strike your best pose.

Welcome to the Studio

With your VIP passes, you’ll be welcomed inside the recording studio, where – wouldn’t you know it – you’ll find The Electric Mayhem cranking out the familiar tunes of “Can You Picture That?” as they rehearse for their big concert.

You’ll be immersed in the story with the first-ever Audio-Animatronics figure of Scooter, who’s joined by the finest audio engineers (all penguins, of course). They’re doing their best to convince The Electric Mayhem to stop jamming and get to their increasingly restless fans, but will it be enough to get the band across town and on stage in time?

This pre-show occupies the exact same space as the current Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. It even uses the same style, with the Electric Mayhem Band on the other side of the recording studio “glass” via a large screen. Also appearing on separate screens flanking the main one are Kermit and Miss Piggy.

What’s less obvious is that Scooter and the penguin audio engineers are Audio Animatronics! This is a huge win for an attraction that we previously expected to be an efficient and inexpensive project–a “no dough” reimagining that was a passion project for Imagineers, as opposed to a well-funded one.

A Rock ‘n’ Roll Road Trip

Thanks to the newest technological advancements from Muppets Labs, we’ll board a super-powered vehicle in the alleyway just behind Studio C known as the Lengthy Immediate Motion Object (L.I.M.O.)! We’ll then take a twisting, turning, and screamingly fun road trip across Hollywood to reach the concert in time.

The iconic scenery and landmarks of Tinseltown will feature a Muppet twist. And throughout the journey, you’ll hear the Electric Mayhem playing some of the most iconic, rockin’ hits in your ears to keep the music and adrenaline pumping.

It’s interesting that the scenery of Tinseltown will feature a Muppet twist. I’d imagine this means that a lot of the existing visuals will be repurposed, which was precisely what we expected, but that there will be Muppet visual gags added to the landmarks. Don’t expect the cut-out style of the scenery to change, but it would be fantastic if there’s more to see along the way.

Electric Mayhem Post Show Rock Roller Coaster Muppets Dhs Wdw 3 Scaled

Electric Mayhem Post-Show

After (spoiler alert) arriving to the concert on time, you’ll see the Electric Mayhem perform “Can You Picture That?” in the post-show. Walt Disney World hasn’t clarified whether these are Audio Animatronics or video, but they’re most likely the former.

For one thing, there isn’t sufficient space for an entire Audio Animatronics band here in the unload area. There is in the former on-ride image review, which could conceivably be converted to a concert space for Audio Animatronics.

However, this is equally unlikely for a whole host of practical reasons. Most significantly, operations would not want the backup of guests that would result from people stopping to watch the AAs perform “Can You Picture That?” Almost equally as important, that post-show did not close early (as was the case with the pre-show), and the tighter timeline would make it nearly impossible to retrofit and install Audio Animatronics during the closure window.

As exciting as the possibility of more Audio Animatronics might be, the Electric Mayhem will probably be presented in video form above the on-ride photo review area, just as Aerosmith concert footage was previously shown. When in doubt, assume the RnRC reimagining will follow the blueprint of its predecessor.

Electric Mayhem Post Show Rock Roller Coaster Muppets Dhs Wdw 2 Scaled

Another reason we suspect these are not Audio Animatronics of the Electric Mayhem is because that simply is not the ‘template’ for this ride reimagining. The speedy turnaround time on the ride reimagining–and getting it reopened by May 26, 2026 along with previews before that–is because substance of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will not materially change for the most part, aside from the pre-show.

The roller coaster track and layout are going to remain unchanged inside the current gravity building. Aside from cosmetically, the ride vehicles are not changing. It’s also likely that the load area, launch, and unload will likely look somewhat similar when all is said and done. Work was done during two lengthy refurbishments in 2023 and 2024 to extend the life of the coaster and ride system.

Imagineering has created story contrivances that offer considerable overlap with Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, allowing for a lot of RnRC to remain unchanged. It’s possible that the current props in the ride-through don’t change all that much, or are perhaps have a bit of “Muppetization” added on top of what’s already there.

Rock Rollercoaster Extra Magic Hours Exemh Hollywood Studios Disney World 765

The biggest changes will be in the pre-show. My guess is that a lot of the props inside the attraction have been hauled over from MuppetVision 3D, and will fill a similar role they did in that attraction’s pre-show. Fan service to MV3D seems like the easy and obvious approach.

Swapping out of posters and other stuff in the queue to be particularly time-consuming. In all likelihood, what’s dictating the reopening date is likely the pre-show, which is what Imagineering started on first. Everything else could be finished or close to it by this point.

Otherwise, you should expect a fairly 1:1 ride reimagining, with Imagineering swapping out Aerosmith stuff for Muppets stuff. The original Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will serve as the blueprint for the changes, and if you don’t like the new music or the Muppets for whatever reason, you can put on headphones during the ride (not recommended since it’s a roller coaster) and listen to Aerosmith to have the same general experience as before.

Rock Roller Coaster Muppets Hollywood Studios Disney World 371

Ultimately, we’re cautiously optimistic about Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets. There are hardcore Muppets fans in Walt Disney Imagineering who fought for this project in the first place, and will likewise work tirelessly to ensure the reimagining is well-done, reusing elements from MuppetVision that would otherwise be discarded, and having as much unique Muppets humor as possible.

Everything we’ve seen and heard about the ride reimagining to date makes us cautiously optimistic, even if the reopening date on May 26, 2026 is (as odd as this might sound) a little earlier than we would’ve liked to see for a proper reimagining project. As Walt Disney World fans playing the long game, we honestly wouldn’t have minded to see this be a year-plus project a la Big Thunder.

Nevertheless, we can’t wait to see how Imagineers pull off this ride reimagining, even if it’ll never fully replace MuppetVision. Then again, maybe it won’t have to…if they do such a good job that this leads to a future Muppets Courtyard in this area, we could end up with a windfall and the start of a bona fide Muppet renaissance!
